Just submitted my first paper to be published!

It's going to be in the 2011 Proceedings of the Society for California Archaeology and is titled “The Commune Era of Olompali: Challenging Our Assumptions of the Hippie Lifestyle”

I was going to post the abstract but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to yet so I won't, just in case :D

So exciting!

So I'm at my internship reading through a 2001 article about Sir Francis Drake and how he may have landed in Point Reyes in 1579 and there's this quote: "Like Brigadoon, the mythical village that appeared out of the Scottish mists once in a century, the spit and the cove appear for 10 years, then vanish for about 53 years before reappearing."

So maybe not everyone will appreciate this but I thought it was amusing to see a newspaper mention Brigadoon considering I hardly ever hear about it otherwise :D

1. witches of eileannan: By Kate Forsyth this is my second favorite book series (first is Harry Potter, lol). It has six books in one series and three in another (different characters, same world). I've read it about three times now and was going to read it again just recently but misplaced the first book somewhere :( The reason I love this series so much is due to the details of the world that Forsyth has built. It's one of those books where you love every. single. character. It has twists and turns and rockin' character development and she writes the dialogue in a Scottish accent so it's realistic too! Additionally, it has a very small fandom, there is a comm on LJ for it but not much else aside from the author's website. I actually did a book review (back in 2004 O.O) here.

2. fog: I love foggy days! They are a mix of creepy and awesome all at the same time. Especially when it's dark out. It's the kind of day where you just want to sit inside, drink hot chocolate, and watch movies!

3. asoue: A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket...the whole thing wouldn't fit in the interests box, lol. This is my fourth favorite book series and if there is anyone who doesn't know what it's about, it's based off the idea that there are no happy endings for the three siblings in the story. It's cute, it's quirky, it's fun, and you just can't help wishing that they WILL get a happy ending!

4. dftba: Don't Forget To Be Awesome or, alternatively, Don't Forget To Bring Alcohol. The Green brothers on youtube coined the phrase in one of their videos and I say awesome a lot so I thought it was a good motto to remember! The one with alcohol was actually suggested by a friend and fits with all the partying we like to do :3

5. celestial things: For the longest time, and even now, I've liked stars and suns and moons. They decorate a lot of little objects that I own and I really miss the curtains I used to have that were midnight blue with gold stars! I'm guessing this has to do with my fascination with outer space and my love of science fiction :D

6. everworld: By K. A. Applegate, another fantasy book series, this one is my third favorite! I actually mod a comm for the Everworld series at [livejournal.com profile] everworld though it doesn't get much traffic, which is to be expected of a small fandom! (I have a lot of small fandoms :D ) This is a young adult series that has 12 books, they're small, though, so it's easy to fly through them! There is humor and adventure and each book switches POV between the four main characters which is awesome, btw, because you really get a sense of who they are and their motivations. I wrote a small thing about the series here too.

7. kore: Kore, also known as Persephone of Greek Mythology. Kore is the young maiden who lives with her mother Demeter for six month out of the year and who becomes Persephone when she goes to live with Hades for the other six months as Queen of the underworld. So when I put the two names together like in my LJ name, it makes one full year. I went through a huge Greek Mythology phase at one point and the story of Persephone is my favorite, I still use the name everywhere I go online (unless it's taken and then I go by Erishkegal, the Mesopotamian Goddess of the underworld!)
