So I haven't posted here in a while but seeing as how I'm leaving tomorrow morning FOR FIELD SCHOOL I figured I'd better post something!

So. I'm leaving for Santa Barbara tomorrow! Got most everything packed and then it's off to field school! I'll be back August 21st, will probably only have internet on the weekends, but we're camping next to the beach and it's FIELD SCHOOL!

This is step number 2 in Finding Liz A Job In Her Field (TM) and I'm feeling hopeful that this will help me find something with a CRM company when I get back (which is step number 3) :D

Plus, camping for six weeks? AWESOME.

Time for another no-post-for-FOREVER-finally-posting post. Yeah.

+ The Music Man is going great! Just finished our second weekend of shows with two more to go! I'd recommend going here, here, and here for pictures (!!!) and a review :D

+ Got my laptop back FINALLY, I missed it so much! It's a bit slower now but hopefully I get to do something to fix that. I'm also beta testing Windows 7, the new one coming out soon after Vista. Generally I like it, it's pretty and all but so far my sims games are not working the way I want them to which is ;_;

- Which led to me having to re-install them today and trying everything I can to get previously backed-up files to show up which worked the last time I had to do it and NOW IT DOESN'T. Hopefully taking a break from it will help...

+ Working at Six Flags is, in general, good. It has been hot here lately and they don't have much shade for us, which I really wished they would do something about and have mentioned before, but we'll see. It keeps me sane knowing that I don't plan to be there forever, or at least not as long as I was in retail. Also, working animal exhibits at a theme park is MUCH better than in foods or something. However...

- To: Visitors of the park, Just because an animal is not moving does NOT mean it is dead or fake. I know common sense is severely lacking in a lot of you people, but we would not have a dead animal on display and do you REALLY think that we would spend all that that effort on new expensive exhibits just to put fake animals in them? Also, WE treat our animals fine, thanks for asking, YOU do not. WE do not spit at alligators to make them move, YOU do, WE do not pull on the tails of stingrays, YOU do, and WE do not bang on the glass windows of the marine animals, YOU do. Also, not every shark you see is a great white, not every stingray is a manta ray and not every penguin comes from Antarctica. But I just explained all of it and you would know this too if you had been listening. No love, me.

+ To end this on a non-ranty ending...

I HAVE SEEN THE TRAILER FOR AVATAR AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT, AANG LOOKS BADASS

ALSO HARRY POTTER MOVIE IS GETTING CLOSER TIME TO START LOOKING FOR EARLY RESERVE TICKETS AT IMAX FTW

SO IS THE RELEASE OF THE NEW NIGHTRUNNER BOOK (!!!!)

Wacky fun!

Okay, wow. For not being in school for a while, things still manage to be busy!

+ I found a second job! At Six Flags in Entertainment. Basically, I get to host animal shows and give out random facts about them. Also, occasionally escorting characters. I worked at Six Flags Fright Fest back in '02 and it was the most fun I've ever had at a job, so I am very much looking forward to this one! Orientation on the 21st, park opens the 28th!

+ I get to catalog artifacts again! I'm an intern at Olompali State Historic Park and one of the days I showed up they were going through a bunch of artifacts that had recently been de-asbestosed (de-asbestized? Either way, they don't have asbestos anymore, lol) and I got to talking with the state archaeologist there and he invited me to help him with the rest of the project! There is an article HERE with more info about it! I am SO looking forward to next Tuesday :D

+ I AM GOING TO SEE WICKED NEXT THURSDAY IT IS FINALLY SINKING IN OMG IT'S GOING TO BE AMAZING. We've had the tickets since last October but now that it's only a week away I'm all Squeeeeee! about it at random times.

+ Going to Reno for Valentine's Day to see Toxic Audio with The Boyfriend. Can't wait for this either, it's been YEARS since I've been to Reno plus we get to see a show! Rock.

+ Going shopping on Monday with my grandma, aunt, mom, and sisters for my mom's birthday! We always have a good time :D

- Our water is getting turned off tomorrow for pipe repairs or something like that, so I gotta go finish my laundry now!

So it looks like I WILL be able to got to SacAnime next weekend! By some stroke of 2009 new year's luck, I have both Friday and Saturday off work!

Oh, I HAVE to mention who is going to be there!

The FMA voice actors of Ed, Roy, and Lust!

EEEEEE! I can't find any programming schedules but all the cool stuff happens on Saturday anyway...

[livejournal.com profile] brinabean and [livejournal.com profile] ky313? Are you able to go? :D?
hazelbite: (OTHER: Book lover)
Okay so when was the last time I actually posted something? I can't remember.

Anyway! My read 50 books for the year thing didn't quite work out but I did get to 41 books which is still more than I read last year :D

Bolded ones were my faves, italics are re-reads (I do re-reads a lot!) strikes are ones I wasn't too fond of
List! )

As I tend to do, I went through reading phases: My re-read phase especially the Hornblower books, I'm slowly adding to my collection of those :D My Terry Prachett phase (I'm planning on reading more of his in '09) and Orson Scott Card phase and probably my biggest phase, Gold Rush era California/The Old West!

My top five favorites for the year are:

5: Slippin' Into Darkness by Norman Partridge
--I made a post about this book earlier in the year and I may be a bit biased because the author is an old high school friend of my dad's, but it really is a spectacular book! If you like plot twisty horror, that is! It kept me hooked and wanting to read more, plus I felt like I knew every single character right away :D

4: Going Postal by Terry Prachett
--My first Prachett book! I am now totally and completely hooked and am planning on reading MANY MORE next year :D Also, Moist von Lipwig has got to be one of my top favorite book characters ever!

3: The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
--I read this HUGE book in less than two days by staying up to 4am, crashing, and reading all the next day. SO COMPLETELY HOOKED by this one...the movie doesn't even compare (but was still good on its own anyway!)

2: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
--My roommate Teresa said I should read it and lent me her copy...I CAN'T BELIEVE I HADN'T READ THIS SOONER. I am pretty sure I can't say anything about this book that hasn't been said already. It also launched my Orson Scott Card phase, which I will continue into '09.

1: MAURICE BY E. M. FORSTER
--I saw the movie first and LOVED it so I decided to read the book and see how different they were. The biggest surprise: they weren't very different at all! Gah, this book is so HEARTWRENCHING and ROMANTIC and all the other things I love about books and I LOVED every single character, yes EVEN Clive though he WAS being a dumbass about Maurice but, his loss, because Maurice gets his guy anyway. Did I mention how ROMANTIC it was? My use of all caps should be an indication of how much I loved it :D

So yeah, if you're looking for something new to read next year, try those!
hazelbite: (OTHER: Book lover)
Just spent WAY more money on books than I had planned...oops?

But the good thing is I went in going 'hmm, I wonder if I'll find more Forrester novels' and I did! So score, that worked out perfectly!

Seriously, the second I hit the scifi section I was grabbing things left and right...so yes, much better selection this time! 'Course it is the big sale at the fair grounds instead of the small library one so I'm not surprised :D No to mention the Anthropology section, which tends to have a majority of books published 1990 and earlier...but I actually found some more recent ones!

Some other highlights:

~The Long, Dark, Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams
~And SIX Orson Scott Card books, including Speaker for the Dead so now I can return the library copy that I'm reading!
~Paperback of The Other Boleyn Girl because the hardback is big!
~The previously mentioned Lieutenant Hornblower by C. S. Forrester

The problem with owning so many books is that I tend to forget what I have and get double copies very often...at least I can sell them!
hazelbite: (SG1: Hip-hop Daniel)
YAY! )
hazelbite: (SG1: Daniel's so HOT!)
