Finished reading HBP...SPOILERS!!!
Jul. 18th, 2005 08:38 pmCatching up with fandom...and I have a wicked sunburn ::grumbles:: but atleast I'm not glow-in-the-dark anymore so, plus points. Anyway.
I never would have thought that another Harry Potter book would ever take the place of my favorite one in the series, Prisoner of Azkaban. That has all changed. My new favorite Harry Potter book is now Half-Blood Prince.
From the very start, the book felt different to me. There was a different atmosphere, considering the style and content of the first two chapters.
I like that we got to see an outside scene with Narcissa, Bellatrix, and Snape. I like that we got to see the "Other" minister. But, by the third
chapter, I was very happy to see Harry again.
But most importantly, I don't think I've ever loved Dumbledore more than in this book. I am even going to put him on my list of favorite characters. Not just because he died, no, but because of the very first time we see him the book. He walks into the Dursley's house and takes command of the scene from then on. You can't help but love Dumbledore when he makes a comment about how they mistreat Dudley so that the Dursley's don't even seem to get what he said. That started of my list of "One milion reasons why I love Dumbledore, all contained in Half-Blood Prince".
The bad part of this is that Jo makes us adore Dumbledore so much that by the time he dies, it makes it even worse. I should have seen it coming. I thought to myself that Dumbledore may die, but I always thought it would be in the seventh book because he wasn't done teaching Harry everything he needed to know. Like Harry himself said, "Just as Dumbledore had left the school, had left the world...had left Harry."
On the brighter side of things, I'm very happy with the progress made on the Ron/Hermione front, seeing as they have been my OTP for awhile now. I want to bash them over the head with a cauldron, though, and tell them to get on with it. They are taking a dreadfully slow time...to me, anyway. The way Hermione acted was a bit odd, I'll admit, and I've read that, OMG she was sooo OOC! But Hermione can't be OOC because she's still canon Hermione. Who knows what is going on her head, anyway, this is Harry's POV after all. I'm not the least but annoyed by it.
I'm absolutely delighted about Harry/Ginny and quite pleased that Harry wasn't being oblivious about it at all. I'm not sad about Harry's decision for them to split up at the end, though. Even in fanfiction, that seems to be a step that needs to be taken. I am hopeful that once permanent peace is restored, Harry/Ginny will become permanent as well.
I must admit that I was surprised about the Lupin/Tonks that appeared out of nowhere. I've liked that pairing before, having first encountered it in fanfiction. I think it's sweet, poor Lupin needs some happiness afterall. The thing that surprised me was how I always say "I ship canon" and twice this time, I've shipped canon before it actually became canon.
It's nice to know that Bill and Fleur are going to get married. Like
ginnaveve said: "It's about time one of the Weasley boys gets married!"
Regarding Slughorn: I liked him, he wasn't annoying or evil or Umbridge-like. He was quite likeable and I hope he stays on as Potions teacher and Head of Slytherin. I think he will for Dumbledore, at any rate.
Regarding Amelia Bones' death: I was actually really sad that it was only metioned with a few lines here and there and not much else was said about her. My RPG Susan will be extremely sad and I wonder how the game will change with all this new canon. Not like there's anyone playing anymore, anyway...
Regarding Fred and George: OMG! There is a reason they are two of my favorite characters! U-NO-POO! Priceless. I love them. So much love boys, so much love ♥
Luna's Quidditch commentary was also very highly amusing. I hear it was one of Jo's favorite parts, too.
Crabbe and Goyle as girls. How WTF?! is that?
Ha! ::snork:: "I am a wizard, not a baboon brandishing a stick."
But, here I am dancing around the Most Important Part.
Snape killed Dumbledore.
Thankfully I was not spoiled one little bit before reading and even if I was, I still wouldn't have believed it.
I don't hate Snape, though. The only character I hate so far, is Umbridge. I'm sure Snape had a reason for doing what he did and we'll just have to wait and see like always! I was extremely shocked, though, when it happened, and was in denial for a bit until I reread The Scene through a few more times.
Oh, and R. A. B.? Regulus Black, IMHO. I know it's gone around fandom like crazy but so far, it's all we've got to go on. I also think Sirius' death and Harry inheriting Grimauld Place will have something to do with finding one of the horcruxes.
Speaking of horcruxes...Chapter twenty-three had me absolutely enthralled. I kept saying to myself, this is what Harry Potter is about, this is the stuff that makes it GOOD and INTERESTING and it's why I loved the series in the first place!
Sometime we just need to go back and read the Book That Started It All.
So, overall, LOVED this book like crazy. I may have forgotten to add some things about it, but I'll probably remember later.
Once I'm able to upload pictures from the midnight party, I will. We had a blast even though it was so croweded. They handed out free posters and wrist bands. It was a lot of fun!

I was like "FINALLY"!!! I was wondering when they would get together. Such a cute couple. Like James and Lily.
I must admit that I was surprised about the Lupin/Tonks that appeared out of nowhere.
Yeah, that was kinda random. lol. But good all the same. Love Lupin and Tonks.

*dies of laughter* Gotta love the twins.

That was the first name that popped in my head, too. I mean, who else could it be?

Yup, the Potter men seem to love redheads!
I actually didn't think of Regulus Black at first until my sister mentioned it, then I was all, Why didn't I think of that! The 'A' might stand for Alphard, too, and JKR didn't flat out deny Regulus in the interview either....
