Persephone's library
Oct. 1st, 2004 03:40 pmSince I love to read I have decided to post a review about my second favorite book series (the first being Harry Potter of course!) At the end I have included a link to the author's official website.
Book: The Witches of Eileannan
Author: Kate Forsyth
Persephone’s Library 10-1-04
I am going to give a review for the first in a six-book series. The book in question is The Witches if Eileanan by Kate Forsyth.
The Witches of Eileanan is the first book in the series, which was changed from Dragonclaw (the Australian title) for publication in America.
Anyway, the first book follows the main character Isabeau (pronounced Is-a-bo), a flame-haired witch-in-training during a time when magic is outlawed. She lives in hiding with her “Mentor” of sorts, a powerful wood witch named Meghan who is far older than you might think…This is (literally) only the beginning, however, when Isabeau sets off on a journey alone with one part of a key, while Meghan goes to the ancient dragons for advice.
In this book we meet some intriguing characters who give us clues to Isabeau’s, and also, Meghan’s past: A cripple who is half raven and heir to the throne, and a flame-haired warrior lass from the mountains who shares an uncanny resemblance to Isabeau. Every character in the entire series lends a hand in bringing magic back to Eileannan, the point of view switching to give them all a chance to speak.
The second book is titled The Tower of Two Moons and is followed by The Cursed Towers. The next book in the series is The Forbidden Land followed by The Skull of The World. The Sixth and Final book is The Fathomless Caves.
The whole series takes place in the fictional land of Eileannan, the largest island of many smaller ones. The characters talk in a decidedly Scottish accent seeing a their ancestors bridged the gap between Scotland on Earth to Eileannan on a new planet. Personally, I was dragged into this series headfirst and found myself many times wishing that I could live in Eileannan.
These books are so encompassing that I guarantee you’ll get lost in them and they are rich enough that you can easily read them over again. Overall, I give these books five out of five stars!
Forsyth has recently written The Tower of Ravens which is set in the land of Eileannan. I haven't read it yet though because it would have to be shipped overseas from Australia and that's expensive. For more information on this series (and for a much better summary than mine) here is the official site address: Kate Forsyth official homepage
Wishing you happy reading and magical journeys, Kore-Persephone
I hope you enjoy reading this series as much as I did!
All my best! Kore-Persephone
